mate , i've had problems like this on an 858 chassis. Check the electrolitics ( caps ) feeding the input of the audio chip. I had one problem where the cap was open curcuit.
Infact , just replace the caps around the audio amp.

perhaps you might want to "juggle" the vco can. Slightly tune it on the band that you're having problems with.

Gday Mate , sounds like the vco is not locking. Get the service diagram and re-align the vco and asscociated cans.

Hello again.

The back of the mic has a metal clip. Just earth the metal clip. This does work on Philips radios...BUT it does not hurt to try.

Hi matey...try this... The AM regulator 2SC1419 is WEAK. UNSOLDER it and toss it in the trash. Replace it with a GE-66, ECG-152 or a NTE-152. Hi Matey.
This might sound silly but it does work on Philips radios....Have you tried earthing the mic ? OR have you tried placing a magnet on the back of the mic ?

Hi Mate. Thanks for taking the time to reply. I do realize these radios have plenty of dry joints , but this radio was working till I shorted something out. Argg !!! The original problem with this was NO TX NO RX. I replaced the PLL chip. Now I still have no tx ( relay clicks over etc ) and very very faint RX. The PLL is working as i can select channels. I too also run the 12v batteries in my realistic power mic. No worries and it sounds cool.
I pick mine up from the supermrkt for around $1.99. Just ask for the car remote alarm batteries. :D

Hello Everyone. Just recently picked up one of these units ( 18 ch ssb ) The problem is no rec / tx . Can hear static / PLL is in Unlocked postition ( 861 chip ) getting around 5v at prog pins and around the chip. TX / RX light works ( ie it is switching ). Hello there.. First up I would be checking the xtals for "dry joints" then the caps around the vco area. I have had problems with drift BUT after trial and error found a couple of cheap electrolitics leaking. Try re-soldering the xtals for a start. Goodluck , I appreciate how anoying it is...
