It's a Simpson 30uA movement from a Bird 43 wattmeter.

No need to worry about it now - I managed to get a good meter off a local buy and sell site, and the faulty meter has been sold to someone for half of what I paid for the new one - a win all round!

Universal squelch board

Anyone know if you can get a "universal add-on squelch board"? I'm looking for a board that can be installed in any radio that doesn't already have a squelch control. Kitset is ok as is ready to go module.

Switch mode power supplies are quite good for all manner of things. Lightweight and cheap to buy.
They usually operate around 22 - 30 kHz switching frequency so the hash is way above the audio spectrum that anyone can hear.

I managed to find a NOS display for my 640e a few years ago, and decided at the time to drop the LED current right back. When I had fitted the new display and saw how bright it was, even on the low setting, I realised why the LEDs end up dying. I can't remember how I did it, think it was just a resi...

If the trace is big enough I suppose it would work. When I think of PCBs these days I think of very tiny narrow traces that don't stand up to any heat etc and are impossible to repair even with wire links.

Glad it worked for you.

Not practical.

The copper is bonded to the fibreglass/phenolic using a very strong adhesive and more often than not you will tear the copper before it comes away cleanly.

Even if you could get it off in one piece, the next issue is applying it and gluing it successfully onto the board.

I have the circuit diagram for that set - plus I think there is a copy in the member's section of RadioMods for it. Bear in mind that the LED display modules for these sets are prone to giving a lot of trouble. The LED segments stop working (especially on the channel number display 8's) and this mod...

Hi Joemac,

If you are unsure about building a supply I suggest you don't!

Power supplies (or anything that plugs to the mains) need respect and care, if you are to live to see another day!

My best advice would be to keep your eyes open on Ebay.

Navico Sea Ranger 5600 marine VHF for parts

Looking for one of these sets for parts. Primarily I need a good chassis and casing. My front panel is Ok.

This radio was marketed under other brands as well but usually had the number 5600 on the front regardless.

Who repairs meters?

Does anyone repair meter movements or know someone/somewhere that does?
Preferably in New Zealand where I am, but if the cost is reasonable I will consider sending it abroad.

I can get a brand new replacement meter for $100 US so any repair would need to be significantly LESS than that.

Cheers.

Yes you can make a long wire antenna, but it won't be very effective.

VHF marine signals are propagated in the vertical plane - most longwires run horizontally.

At 156MHz, the wavelength is 1.92 metres.

That would be a very short longwire!

Hi,

Have you tried RS Components for the plugs and sockets? They will be dearer than anywhere else but there is a good chance they will have them.

For the cable, you just need 4 core screened which is readily available most places. Even Jaycar may have it.

If it was on the rear of the board (the copper side) chances are it was an after-thought - possibly added after the set left the production line as a means of suppressing some kind of interference that had been causing problems somewhere. Getting a copy of the circuit would certainly be a good start...

A CB antenna is just that - an antenna for a CB. It's NOT for running a marine VHF set into. Marine frequencies are in the order of 160MHz - CB is either 27MHz or 477MHz depending on what sort of CB you are running - either way it's miles off the mark. If you are fortunate your marine set may have s...

Your best solution in that case would be HF.

You are correct in assuming that VHF is fairly line of sight - if you are in a valley surrounded by hills there is little you can do to improve your signal either in RX or TX.

It's a shame they stopped using HF.

When all the other tonka-toy modes of communication (cellphones, faxes etc) stop working, HF can still be relied upon to keep in touch almost anywhere.

Things may have changed but the last time I looked into it, if you wanted a marine VHF operator's licence, you had to have a boat - ie they issued a licence in respect of a vessel and the callsign was registered to that vessel as opposed to licencing the operator themselves. Scott, you have just don...
