PLL Number:
Test gear available: watt meter,vom
Symptoms:cold weather frequency drift

What is working:

What has been tried: nothing yet

Did it suddenly happen ?: no got radio used this way
Anything else that may be of help?:
hi,during cold weather operation our galaxy 88 can be as much as 3kc off freq.as it warms up it creeps back toward center slot.but this is alot of drift.more than any galaxy should have .

what to do?change out the crystal??resolder the crystal as close to the board as possible??let me know your thoughts and ideas befor i proceed.thanks.

nobody???ok..what crystal should i change out or suspect first??x2?there are 3 in this chassis.

i would 1st redo the solder joints in pll, vco sections & the regulator on the side.

Changing crystals won't make any difference, it's the cold weather that's causing the problem.
How far is it.
Twice it's length from halfway.

cold weather can cause a little drift ,but i have never seen it this bad .usually 1kc at most.even my general lee is on freq when cold .the 6th digit may be a few off is all.thanks for your response.

changed out the 10.240 crystal this morning .resoldered the rest of the crystals .gonna put it back in the cold truck and see what happens.i only have trouble when the radios cold .all galaxies drift a little but this was excessive.updates later.

changing the crystal did nothing .went out an hour later and ch19 reads 27.187.so nothing has helped so far .

I have a SS158 EDX that does the same thing,I have found that some of the caps around the tuning cans are very sensitive to temperature change hot or cold very common for these radios and looks like not they are not of very good quality.
