HR2510 power increases as radio warms up.

Post by romakdaddy »

Radio Make and Model:
uniden hr2510
PCB Number:
pb-111ad 1986
PLL Number:

Test gear available:
multimeter, wattmeter
Symptoms:
set 5 watt deadkey when cold, put covers back on let sit turned on for 45-min to an hour deadkey increases to 12-15 watts.

What is working:
everything works fine just the wattage fluctuation with heat

What has been tried:
sprayed cold air when deadkeying, got a drop in watts near vr107,wiggle vr107 watts flucuate(thought i found it)replaced vr107 no more change when wiggling, wattage still goes up with heat.cold shot test revealed q113 will drop wattage big time when hit with cold air, changed q113...no change.ic107 seems to be getting a bit warm and is in the vicinity of q113 and vr107,tested ic107 pin voltage and all is normal.

Did it suddenly happen ?:
been doing it since i bought the unit second(or third,fourth,fifth..ect)hand.
Anything else that may be of help?:

Have you tried making the adjustment when the radio has warned up first, or did you do it while the radio was cold.
How far is it.
Twice it's length from halfway.

i adjust it cold and then it goes up if i set it warm then its low when cold.i did relocate q113 via a 3 pin connector with 4 inches of wire and moved it away from the regulator and it seems more stable now but its kinda an extreme mod when it should be fine where it was.

1) Heat up the area around the regulator with a hairdryer

2) TX and adjust for 4W carrier

3) Squirt freezer spray (such as http://www.maplin.co.uk/freezer-spray-26296 ) on components near the regulator, one at a time, until the TX power drops. Leave 15 seconds between each component / squirt.

4) When you find the component affected by heat, replace it.

Most likely candidates: small red diodes and 10V electrolytic capacitors.
